Softcover. First edition. Sewn printed wrappers. 56pp. A little foxing to the wrappers, else near fine. Inscribed: "James Hayward, Esq. with the author's regards." Cushing was a brigadier general in the Mexican-American War, and had a long and active career in government, including an appointment as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to China and a nomination by Grant as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1874, but he failed to be confirmed. Cushing gave many annual orations on the Glorious Fourth, but *OCLC* fails to locate a copy of this one.
