Fire Song

Zurich: (Frederic Prokosch), 1955.

Price: $1,250.00

First edition. Marbled paper self-wrappers with white printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this is copy "J" of 10 lettered copies in paper from St. Gallen. Inscribed by the author. Extra label tipped-in. In an envelope with a note from the recipient asking Prokosch to sign on the page facing the title-page, and with Prokosch's note apologizing for doing otherwise. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. OCLC locates three copies in institutions.
