Hardcover. First edition, first issue. Binding A with blind embossed brown cloth, gilt-stamped spine title, three fleur-de-lis ringed monograms on the spine with the publisher's logo. Endpaper with "Works of Permanent Value" and "Poetry and the Drama" and "School Books". Title in black and red, with a period after the publisher on title. Illustrated with eight plates with tissue guards present. Title page with an engraving and tissue guard preceding the main title page. Spine cocked, pages 145-168 are sprung, modest horizontal tear at the crown, but the cloth is fresh, an about very good copy. The essays were originally published in *The Atlantic Monthly* in 1857 and 1858 before being collected in book form. *BAL* 8781.
