Poet and miscellaneous writer who, after a failed political career in his native Alabama, bought a one way ticket to New York and "enetered literature." For a time he waited tables and was Upton Sinclair's secretary, but by the 1920s his poetry, such as "The Smithy of God" and "Jehovah," began to win contests and his professional career was assured.
