The Italian-born son of an American physician and artist who served in the Canadian army for three years during WWI. The war was the setting for his first and best known novel, Paths of Glory. He was also a screenwriter, best known in this regard for his script for the 1937 film San Quentin, starring Humphrey Bogart.
