First American edition of this issue and the second English language edition. Translated by Dorothy Bussy. Originally issued by Knopf in 1925 as The Vatican Swindle, this issue was supplied with the original sheets but with new front matter as well a new dustwrapper and boards. Spine lettering a little dull, else fine in a very attractive, near fine dustwrapper with a bit of age-toning at the spine. One of Gide's more important works, and exceptionally uncommon in jacket.
