Theatre Magazine and Stage Magazine A collection of Theatre Magazine and Stage Magazine. The issues are bound, with original covers, into hardcover volumes, each of which collect six months worth of issues. Collected by screenwriter, producer and director, Nunally Johnson. 56 volumes, quarto, illustrated, custom-bound into cloth with Johnson's name printed on the front board of each volume. A fine set, lacking several issues, the run spans 1905 to 1939, featuring articles and numerous photographs of the then-popular stars of stage and opera, as well as news of films, and film actors. Most issues also contain summaries, or extended excerpts from popular plays of the day, presumably many of these would represent the first, and in some cases, only printed appearances. Theatre Magazine changed its name to Stage Magazine in 1932.Nunally Johnson (1897-1977) started as a reporter on the Columbus Enquirer Sun, and later wrote stories for The Saturday Evening Post and other magazines. After a few of his stories were adapted to film, he moved to Hollywood in 1932 and began writing for the screen the following year. During the 1930s and 1940s he was consistently among film's best screenwriters, and was nominated for several Oscars, including his screenplay for The Grapes of Wrath (1940). During the 1950s he ventured into producing films and directed a few as well, including The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956) and The Three Faces of Eve (1957). Among the many other films he either wrote or wrote and produced were Jesse James, Tobacco Road, Roxie Hart, The Pied Piper, The Keys of the Kingdom, Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, The Desert Fox, My Cousin Rachel, How to Marry a Millionaire, Night People, Black Widow, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, The World of Henry Orient, and his final film, The Dirty Dozen.
