Autographs For Freedom Second edition, expanded. Brown figured cloth gilt (no priority). Small contemporary name stamp of George H. Dickerson. Slight spotting on the boards, and light wear at the extremities, else a near fine copy. A collection of anti-slavery essays and contributions written in response to the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society's solicitation for this compilation. Each contribution features the author's signature in facsimile. Among the contributors are Harriet Beecher Stowe, Dr. James McCune Smith, Horace Greeley, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Steward, Horace Mann, Lewis Tappan, Gerit Smith, William Jay, Theodore Parker, James Mercer Langston, Thomas W. Higginson, Henry Ward Beecher, and William Wells Brown. The second edition replaces Frederick Douglass's formerly unpublished novella The Heroic Slave, his only attempt at fiction, and which appeared in the first edition, with a relatively brief (five pages) excerpt from a speech. BAL 5224, 19373. [BTC #89354] |
