JOYCE, James

Ulysses

First Edition. Small quarto. Original blue wrappers titled in white. Bookplate on the first leaf, the spine and the edges of the wrappers have been beautifully and expertly restored, thus near fine. Housed in half blue calf solander box. This is one of 750 copies printed on handmade paper, of a total edition of 1000 copies. Possibly the magnum opus of the 20th Century, and certainly one of the most important modern novels, this stream-of-consciousness epic routinely tops lists of great books. Beginning in 1918 episodes of this novel were published in the American Little Review, until it was banned in 1920. On publication copies of the book had to be smuggled into the United States, often with the aid of rebinding. All copies of the first edition are desirable, those in original wraps particularly so. Connolly 100.
