Sondheim's first Broadway musical, a breathtaking update of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to contemporary New York street-gangs. Rarely have concept, setting, score, libretto and choreography come together so brilliantly on stage. That the achievement could further be translated so successfully to film, winning ten Academy Awards, is without precedent. It is also the only film for which two directors received Oscars (Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise).
