KIPLING, Rudyard

[Small broadside]: The Vampire: A Painting by Sir Philip Burne-Jones which inspired the following poem by Rudyard Kipling ... Robert Hilliard in "A Fool There Was"

Single octavo sheet, approximately 6" x 9". Printed in purple on coated paper with reprint of the Burne-Jones painting, and Kipling's poem. A small tear to one corner, some faint pencil writing in the upper left-hand corner, a very good example. Kipling's poem was inspired by the 1897 Burne-Jones painting. In 1909, actor and producer Robert Hilliard produced A Fool There Was on Broadway, which this small broadside was apparently an advertisement for. In 1915, film producer William Fox purchased the rights, and tapped the previously obscure 29-year-old Theodosia Goodman to star as The Vampire, giving her the stage name Theda Bara. Her performance in this film provided her with her nickname, "The Vamp."
