Gone with the Wind
Second printing (June, 1936). Unbound signatures, prepared by the printer for proofreading (and bought by us from the daughter of a proofreader). Chips, tears, and a stain to the first few leaves, thus good only. We have had unbound sheets from the first issue (May, 1936), a few sets of which were apparently sent out for review. A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that helped both to cement the legend of the "Old South," and subtly subvert it at the same time. Certainly one of the most famous and popular novels of this century and basis for the memorable film, we have never seen another set of second issue proof sheets. Although we have yet to compare this set to the 1037 pages in the first printing to check for textual variation, one might profitably undertake such a collation if one had lots of time on one's hands. Since it seems unlikely the publisher would have produced a new set of proofreading signatures if no textual changes were made between the first and second printings, a careful collation is likely to yield fresh bibliographic insight into this popular American classic. An obscure rarity, and something for the GWTW collector in your life that they are very unlikely to already have.
