First edition, first issue binding, second issue text. Some staining to pages, a very good copy in a very good, first issue dustwrapper with chipping to the corners and spinal extremities. Dreiser's second novel, like his first a naturalistic story of a young woman who becomes the mistress of a wealthy man and is shunned by society. Dreiser was forced by Harper's editors to make substantial changes to his manuscript (making it less critical of organized religion, the institution of marriage, etc.), and it was his first commercial success. A major 20th Century American novel, scarce in jacket.
