Original Art: Veiled King on Throne Surrounded by Nymphs and Soldiers Original art. Watercolor. Image matted to approximately 13.25" x 17.5". Framed. Signed lower right: "A.C. 97." Matted in tan suede (preserving the worn, yellow silk matte below). A couple of light scratches on the image, still fine. A wonderful and haunting image of a veiled king on his thrown, surrounded by diaphanously clad (or altogether unclad) serving women. Born and trained in France, Castaigne came to America where he was active in San Francisco until the earthquake, then moved to New York where he was a prolific illustrator for both magazines and books, particularly those published by the Century Company. Perhaps his best known illustrations are the striking two-page illustrations in the American edition of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera. [BTC #81202] |
