Dear Ruth

New York: Dramatists Play Service, Inc., (1945).

Price: $275.00

Hardcover. First edition (a Random House play edition was issued, perhaps simultaneously, in the same year). Fine in a near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a couple of tiny nicks on the front panel. Screen actress Jane Withers' copy with her bookplate on the half-title. A scarce play, a Broadway smash made into a 1947 film featuring Joan Caulfield, whose younger sister uses her name in a flirtatious correspondence with soldier William Holden. When they meet a comedy of errors ensues. A poster for the film was allegedly the inspiration for J.D. Salinger to name the protagonist of his first novel, *The Catcher in the Rye*, Holden Caulfield. The film inspired the sequels *Dear Wife* (1949, also with Holden and Caulfield) and *Dear Brat* (1951).
