Kitty

London: Alvin Redman, (1956).

Price: $400.00

Hardcover. First English edition. Small bookstore label, spine gilt a little tarnished, else fine in a very good plus, price-clipped dustwrapper with a couple of short tears on the front panel, and a shallow sliver lacking from the foot of the spine. Basis for the highly successful 1945 costume drama directed by Mitchell Leisen and featuring Paulette Goddard as a beautiful 18th Century Cockney girl whose refinement is orchestrated by Ray Milland after the girl is spotted by the great painter Thomas Gainsborough. Because of wartime production problems, this American novel published in the U.S. in 1943 wasn't issued in London until 1956. Very scarce issue.
