Within and Without: A Dramatic Poem

First edition. Original blind stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering. Spine ends carefully and professionally restored, and the front fly professionally repaired, else a very good plus copy of MacDonald's very uncommon first book, housed in a custom cloth clamshell case titled in gilt. A wonderful association copy, Inscribed by MacDonald to the author of The Water Babies: "The Reverend Charles Kingsley with much honour from George MacDonald." MacDonald struggled to have the book published. It was rejected by several publishers before it was finally accepted and published by Longmans, to a good reception, including by Kingsley, who wrote to MacDonald approvingly. Like Kingsley, MacDonald also went on to write a childhood classic, The Back of the North Wind.
