Ten Little Nigger Tunes Easily Arranged for the Pianoforte

First edition. Quarto. Decorated wrappers. Slight repair to the head of the spine near the front panel, a little overall soiling, a nice, very good or better example of this collection of arrangements of ten Stephen Foster tunes. The title derives from the English folk ditty, still popular in that era, that begins: "Ten little nigger boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were Nine," with each verse diminishing the group by one until "One little nigger boy left all alone; He went out and hanged himself and then there were None." The racist rhyme seems to have been much more prevalent in England in the first third of the 20th Century than in America. It inspired various children's books and games, racist trinkets, and even the 1939 Agatha Christie novel Ten Little Niggers (retitled And Then There Were None for its 1940 American publication).
