The Modern "Rake's Progress" First trade edition. Pictures by David Low. Quarto. Cloth and decorated paper over boards. Paper worn through on the corners else near fine lacking the original slipcase. Inscribed by West to her mother-in-law Mary Andrews: "With love to Mary Andrews, from Rebecca-Cecily wishing her many happy returns of the day 18th December 1934" (West's given name was Cecily Fairfield). West married Henry Andrews in 1930 and in her memoirs describes her mother-in-law thus: "beautiful in a Brunnehildish way: over six foot tall, with masses of glossy black hair that fell to her hips, and immense black eyes..." A nice association. [BTC #68641] |
