CAMP, Walter and Lorin F. Deland
Football
First edition. 425pp., line drawings. Early, neat owner name, page edges a little soiled, some soiling to the boards, a very good copy. An early book on football issued to help the development of the game. Camp was the Coach of the Yale football team and probably did more than anyone else to popularize the game and to shape the rules as they now stand including cutting the number of players to 11 (from 15), instituting the quarterback position, creating a scrimmage to institute play (rather than a "scrum") and designing the "gridiron" pattern of the field. Additionally he was probably the first national figure to promote personal physical fitness, especially during the First World War. A lovely copy.
