The Spell of Egypt First edition using this title, originally published as Egypt and Its Monuments. Japanese vellum presentation binding with a handpainted watercolor rendering of The Sphinx and The Great Pyramid, Signed by "F.M. Bennett 1910" on the front board. Slight foxing to the first few pages, else near fine. Bookplate of Victoria Sackville at Knole on the front pastedown, and Inscribed by the author on the title page: "Lady Sackville from Robert Hichens." Lady Sackville was the mother of the novelist Vita Sackville-West. The artist, Frank Moss Bennett, (1874-1953) was a noted painter of portraits, genre and decorative scenes, and his work was popular in prints, calendars, cards, and is still reproduced in posters. His oil paintings continue to sell regularly at the major art auction houses. A lovely and unique copy. [BTC #64512] |
