Of Human Bondage First edition, first state, preceding the British edition. Contemporary name, very slightly edgeworn, a fine, bright and square copy, lacking the rare dustwrapper. Maugham's masterpiece, a semi-autobiographical portrait of the doctor as a young man. Filmed several times, in 1934 by John Cromwell, with Leslie Howard and Bette Davis; in 1946 by Edmund Goulding with Paul Henreid, Eleanor Parker, Alexis Smith, and Edmund Gwenn; and in 1964 by Bryan Forbers and Ken Hughes with Kim Novak, Laurence Harvey, Robert Morley, and Siobhan McKenna. A very nice copy. [BTC #56474] |
