Glory for Me

First edition. Very faint, small dampstain to the edge of the front fly, fine in fine dustwrapper but for some inevitable fading to the red spine lettering. Nicely Inscribed by the author: "To Elizabeth with love. MacKinlay Kantor. April 12, 1946." Reportedly, legendary film-producer Sam Goldwyn read a Life Magazine article about returning veterans of WWII and their difficulties in adjusting to civilian life. He felt strongly that the story should be filmed, profitably or not, and hired Kantor to write a script. The author chose instead to write this novel in blank verse, which Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert E. Sherwood then scripted into the film The Best Years of Our Lives. During production the film was considered by many to be too serious, a sure flop, but with a brilliant script, cast and crew it became an immediate hit, going on to win seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor and Supporting Actor. The latter was won by amputee Harold Russell, who also took home a second Oscar, a special award for bringing hope and courage to other veterans. An uncommon book employing cheap, leftover wartime paper stock, and especially uncommon in this condition. A lovely copy.
