SLOAN, John

Two page Autograph Letter Signed ("John Sloan")

Written on both sides of a single quarto leaf. Dated 30 May 1919 to Gus Mager. Folded as mailed, with some rubbing to the folds, and an ink blot (made by Sloan in the writing), but still very good or better. Written on brown, butcher-type paper, Sloan gives very detailed instructions for stretching, sizing, and preparing canvas for painting, with a brief note to Mager that "The above is about all I know, but I think it is reliable." Mager was the creator of several successful newspaper cartoons including Hawkshaw the Detective, as well as a member of the Ash Can school of fine art painting, and an exhibitor in the landmark first Armory Show.
