Hardcover. First American edition. Frontispiece by N.C. Wyeth. Two tiny holes in the front joint, foredge very slightly soiled, else fine in fine dustwrapper with slight wear. Sabatini's most successful work, a grand adventure of a British physician who is sold into slavery and escapes to become a feared buccaneer. Originally filmed in 1923 with J. Warren Kerrigan, Warner Brothers decided to remake it in 1935 but Robert Donat, originally set to star, bowed out due to health concerns. Jack Warner, determined to keep the Michael Curtiz film under budget, decided to cast in the leads two unknowns with a few bit parts between them: Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. They were catapulted to stardom and they, Curtiz, and the film's composer, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, collaborated on several other films. A magnificent copy of a desirable title.
