This copy Inscribed by Hemingway: "To Cuyler Stevens with all best wishes Ernest Hemingway." Stevens was in the Princeton class of 1926, and a copy of Winner Take Nothing inscribed to Stevens was in the landmark Goodwin sale. Hemingway's breakthrough novel, based on his own experiences among American and British expatriates attempting to regain equilibrium and discover meaning to their lives in the aftermath of the First World War. Set in the cafes of Paris and around the bull rings of Pamploma during the festival of San Fermin, this novel defined and named "The Lost Generation," and went a long way towards reinventing modern fiction and the way English was used in it. One of only 5090 copies of the first printing, which sold out within weeks. An inscribed copy of one of the most sought after novels, and one of a handful of irrefutable 20th Century high spots in the exceptionally uncommon first issue jacket, without restoration.
