First edition. Bookplate, the spine is tanned, the boards soiled, and a stain at the foot, a good plus copy in an about fine dustwrapper with a short tear. Presumably the book was married to the jacket at some point, or perhaps divorced and re-married later. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, and with a small, brief, non-authorial gift inscription probably added at a later date. Basis for the marvelous film, shot on location in Florida, with Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman, Jr., who won a special Academy Award as Jody Baxter. A Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, very seldom found signed.
