The Sailcloth Shroud First edition. Owner name, near fine in an about very good dustwrapper that has a little of the usual sunning on the spine, some light nicks and tears and one small stain at the base of the spine. A novel of violence and detection by this former merchant marine, appropriately set at sea. Williams is perhaps best known for Dead Calm and The Hot Spot, both made into noir films. He seems to follow in the tradition of Jim Thompson, David Goodis and Charles Willeford: writers who toiled producing gritty, realistic and hardboiled paperback originals and who have gradually become accepted as among the best practitioners of their genre. Author's second hardcover. Basis for the 1975 film The Man Who Would Not Die, co-scripted by mystery writer Charles Chesbro (his only film work) and featuring Dorothy Malone, Keenan Wynn, and Aldo Ray. [BTC #48287] |
