Western comedy – a family stakes their homestead in the middle of an existing ranch but unlike most westerns the ranchers are cordial and the cowboys are friendly. Bertha Bower was one of the best women writers of western novels, and many of her novels were made into films. Her novel *Chip of the Flying U* (1904) is something of a western classic in the mold of *The Virginian*.
