The English author Gissing was a brilliant student whose academic career was cut short when he was caught stealing from classmates while attempting to reform and support a young prostitute. He married the girl (the first of two miserable marriages) and began a life of constant drudgery and near poverty. The hardness of his life is reflected in the realism of his novels, which are also noted for their acute perception of the social position and psychology of women.
