Softcover. First edition. Octavo. 40pp. Photographic frontispiece portrait of the author on the title page. Gray wrappers printed in black. Substantial stains and small chips on the front wrapper and spine, good, but internally near fine. Johnson's mother Jane was captured by his paternal grandfather, a slave trader, who bequeathed her to his son, Richard. Richard and Jane had five children on his Kentucky farm, but under pressure from his neighbors he sold his family into slavery. Johnson includes his address in the hopes that a surviving sibling contact him but sadly no such reunion ever occurred. He died two years after publication in 1903. Very scarce, especially in wrappers. *OCLC* locates nine copies over two entries.
