The Moviegoer

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961.

Hardcover. First edition. Fine in a lightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper with very light edgewear. Inscribed by the author to publisher and bibliographer Stuart Wright: "for Stuart with my thanks for what he did with a magazine article. Walker. Covington February 6, 1980." Wright was the publisher of the Palaemon Press, which published fine press editions of most of the best Southern authors of the time. Presumably Percy is referring to the fine press edition of *Bourbon* which Wright published as a private edition in 1979, and later republished in another edition in 1981. Estimates of the size of the printing of *The Moviegoer* vary, with strong cases for both 1500, and 3000. *The Moviegoer* was awarded the National Book Award over both *Catch-22* and *Franny and Zoey*. The author's exceptionally scarce first book and a highspot of modern Southern literature, inscribed copies have become very uncommon, and are seldom found with notable associations.

Collecting tips:

Percy was a hot ticket for a while, but the only one of his regularly published books to command a real premium is his first The Moviegoer, (1961). Legends abound about how many copies were printed with speculation ranging between 1,000 and 5,000, with many copies going to libraries (beware of books and jackets that don't quite seem to go together, as this has always been a favorite target for matchmakers). Signed copies especially command a premium, even though by all accounts Percy was generous with his signature. Early offprints of his scholarly work in wrappers, such as Symbol as Need, (1954) are more peripheral and have a more limited audience, but are nice things to add to a collection if you're in the mood.
