The Loyal Publication Society of New York was led by Charles King, president of Columbia University, and the German-American jurist Francis Lieber. A second, sister Society was established in Boston. Both were founded in 1863 after the Union Army had suffered many defeats, in order to bolster public support for the Union effort. They achieved this by disseminating pro-Union tracts and related articles to newspapers around the country, directly to Union soldiers. The tracts address the economic, social, and political issues of the day, this particular tract discusses Caroline Kirkland's views on the Civil War.
