Hardcover. First American edition. Vol. 108. Two consecutive monthly issues in one volume: (No. 215 for July and no. 216 for October). Octavo. pp. [2 (title)] [i] ii-v [vi (blank)], [1] 2-316. Ex-library copy neatly bound in dark blue cloth over boards, title written in white on spine, plain paper endleaves. Bookplate on front pastedown and four small unobtrusive ink stamps: to the bottom margin of the first index page, the blank margins of the first page of each monthly issue [pp. 1 and 160], and the last page. The title page is neatly detached, else very good. Contains the first American appearance of Samuel Wilberforce's celebrated review of Darwin’s *Origin of the Species* in the July number (pp. 118-138): “On the Origin of Species, by means of Natural Selection; or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.” This is the article which set the stage for Bishop Wilberforce’s legendary debate with T.H. Huxley in June 1860. Also of interest in the October number is James Craigie’s review of “Eliot's Novels” (Scenes of Clerical Life, Adam Bede, and The Mill on the Floss), and Samuel Smiles article on “Workmen’s Earnings and Savings” in the July number. Other notable articles in this volume include: “The Missing Link and the London Poor”; “Stonehenge”; and “The Cape and South Africa.”.
