Toomer's second book His novel, *The Cane*, was the first book of the Harlem Renaissance. Our observation based on copies of this title that we have seen is that relatively few copies were actually signed and distributed at the time of publication, and that the vast majority of copies, possibly 800 or more, languished in a warehouse, unsigned, until after Toomer's death.
