Gay Power – Volume 1, Number 16

May 1970.

Price: $4,500.00

Softcover. Newspaper. Folio. 23pp. Newsprint wrappers. Toned with tiny tears along the spine and the foredge, very good. This copy of "New York's first homosexual newspaper" is notable for its cover image from controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, which may be his earliest published photo – The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York could not identify any earlier published Mapplethorpe photos. The image is a reproduction of a collage titled "Bull's Eye" that was produced during his final year at the Pratt Institute of Design where he studied graphic arts, and this printing predates his first one-man show held at Stanley Amos's gallery in the Chelsea Hotel on November 4, 1970. Mapplethorpe started taking his own photos to use in collages instead of using images from books and magazines because "it was more honest." He received his first Polaroid camera in 1970, the same year as this image. *OCLC* locates no copies.
