Opera Guyed

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1953.

Price: $400.00

Hardcover. Thirteenth printing. Very good in price-clipped near very good dustwrapper sunned on the spine. Inscribed by the author to the great boxing champion Gene Tunney: "For Gene and Polly Tunney with warmest regards.* Newman Levy. March 7, 1955. *See especially page 13." Page 13 is a retelling of the Samson and Delilah story with Samson portrayed as a pugilist who refuses to fight, except for his country. This had an interesting parallel with Tunney's life. Tunney quit the ring in response to an ultimatum issued by his heiress fiancé, his only belligerent activities thereafter were as an officer in the Navy during WWII.
