Prang's American Chromos. Odalisque, No. 2

[Boston: L. Prang & Co., 1873].

Price: $425.00

Hardcover. Chromolithographic advertising placard for “Prang’s American Chromos”. 11.25" x 8". Modest scuff marks along the margins of the image and edges; corner tips rubbed; printed labels to verso tanned and darkened with age and with some loss to text. A scarce advertising placard chromolithograph from the famed Boston firm of L. Prang. The chromolithograph is after a painting by Gustav Richter of “Odalisque”, an Arabic slave from a sultan’s harem, and is complemented with a “List of Prang’s Chromos” pasted verso with a date of December 1, 1873. This list is in two columns with over one hundred print titles and their prices. The December date suggests that these prints would have been marketed with the Christmas shopping season in mind. “The American Chromos became a symbol of Prang’s firm. Although he produced all kinds of lithographic work, in the popular mind “American Chromo” meant L. Prang and Company - and “Prang” meant “chromo” (Marzio, 103). By 1870 all of Prang’s work was being produced by steam engines (Marzio,89). See OCLC 191118289 for similar.
