A woman in fur coat eagerly addressing a crowd from atop a truck "Vote! Straight Ticket!" The United States election of 1948 is considered to be one of the greatest election upsets in American History. Democratic challenger Harry S. Truman was predicted by almost every poll to fall to Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey. Despite a three way split in his own party, Truman won the vote largely in part because of the voting participation of women and minorities.
