First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with a very short rubbed tear on the rear panel. A play based on the Scottsboro case that featured Claude Rains and Ruth Gordon in its original debut. Warmly Inscribed by Wexley to left-wing journalist John Spivak: "To John Spivak, who listened attentively and otherwise till 4 A.M." Spivak covered the trial for the International Labor Defense. He was eventually blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Jacket blurbs by Countee Cullen, S.N. Behrman, and Robert Benchley. Wexley also wrote or co-wrote several screenplays including Angels With Dirty Faces and The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse.
