SILLIMAN, B[enjamin]

Suggestions Relative to the Philosophy of Geology

First edition. Stitched. 119pp. Wrappers lacking. Modest wear to the first leaf, very good. Inscribed by the author: "George Combe Esq. with affec. regards of the author. March 10, 1840." The inscription is a bit irregularly faded but readable. Combe was a Scot, and a leading writer on education and especially phrenology. His writings drew much attention to the subject on the continent and in the U.S., where Silliman was reportedly engaged by the subject. Combe visited the U.S. between 1838 and 1840, presumably when this pamphlet was presented. A nice association.
