The Iliad of Homer. Translated by Mr. Pope First issued by subscription, the present set is comprised of a later edition of Volume I, and first editions of Volumes II-VI. Four volumes bound in six. Quartos. Uniformly bound in beautiful contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilded spines, and red and brown morocco spine labels gilt. Frontispiece and map in Volume I; map in Volume II; and the "Shield of Achilles" plate in Volume V. Elaborate engraved head and tail pieces. Decorative initial capital letters. Bookplate in each volume, (two in Volume I), a little scattered foxing, a couple of small splits at the joints, a lovely very near fine set. A justly celebrated triumph -- each new translation of Homer reflects the needs and tastes of its age, but Pope's majestic translation is timeless. A beautiful set. [BTC #291870] |
