Torso portrait portrays Ker in riding clothes, hat and gloves, with facsimile signature below. John Ker, third Duke of Roxburghe was a noted book collector. While in London, he spent most of his time collecting rare books. He and his patron, George III had competing collections. He had an unrivalled collection of books from Caxton's press, genealogies of the Knights of the Round Table, and rare sixteenth-century editions of the Scottish Acts of Parliament. The sale of his collection at auction in 1812 is said to be the highest point reached by 'the thermometer of bibliomania.'.
