Unbound. 11 3/4" x 8 3/4". Engraved by Samuel Bellin. Modest wear on right-hand side and bottom, aging-toning at edges, and a small crease at upper right-hand corner, else near fine. Joseph Gulston (1745-1786) was a print collector and connoisseur who amassed an unrivaled collection of rare prints. By 1786 his collection contained 18,000 foreign and 23,500 English portraits, 11,000 English caricatures and political prints, and 14,500 topographical views. This illustration includes both his portrait and family crest with motto, "Crescit sub pondere virtus" or "Virtue thrives beneath oppression." Signs of wear on right-hand side and bottom; some aging around the edges. Small crease at upper right-hand corner.
