Price: $250.00

Hardcover. First edition (see following). Text in German. Stated second edition: "Zweite Auflage" but actually the first masquerading as a second edition for political reasons. 12mo. A popular political pamphlet by the German writer and journalist Joseph von Görres, founder and editor of the influential journal *Der Rheinische Merkur*. Written in response to the reactionary Carlsbad Decrees of 1819 (which dissolved the Burschenschaften, cracked down on the liberal press, and restricted academic freedom), the book was suppressed by the Prussian government and Gorres was forced to flee to Strasbourg, where he wrote his great work on Christian mysticism.
