POOLE, John
Hamlet Travestie: In Three Acts with Burlesque Annotations After the Manner of Dr. Johnson and Geo. Stevens, Esq. and the Various
Fourth Edition. Original boards with nineteenth century reback in leather with spine label. Free endpapers replaced, presumably when the book was rebacked. Title inked on the front board in an early, probably contemporary hand, corners quite worn, a not quite very good, still not unpleasing copy. This copy Inscribed on the front pastedown: "To W.H.W. Betty, Esq. from his friend Jn. Poole." The recipient was the famous English child actor "Master Betty." The author's first play, a satire on Hamlet, originally published in 1810. Poole wrote over 30 plays, mostly farces performed at Haymarket, Covent Garden or Drury Lane. A nice association between a leading comic playwright and a well-known actor.
