MENCKEN, H.L.
The Gist of Nietzsche
First edition. Cloth and paper labels. Fine, lacking the unprinted glassine dustwrapper. One of Mencken's earliest works, commissioned by his publisher after his 1908 book The Philosophy of Nietzsche. The German philosopher's primary attraction for, and influence upon, the young but individualistic American was in his tone and his rejection of previously held beliefs. In plowing through the complete works of Nietzsche, in German, the twenty-six year old Mencken formed many of the thoughts and opinions to be found in his later work.
