Some authors have only one book in them. A few notable writers, such as Margaret Mitchell and Harper Lee, literally only published a single book, but in both cases the book became an instant classic, won the Pulitzer Prize, as was quickly made into an equally revered film. Other authors, according to their critics, also have only one book in them but no one told them to stop. It is for that first book that they will always be remembered, sometimes despite the merits of their follow-up works. Joseph Heller and J.D. Salinger, for example, are primarily identified with their inaugural efforts. And for still other authors, their first work shows little promise of the talent yet to come. William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, for example, both had very modest first books. Regardless of their ultimate critical reception, the first books by major authors will always be collected.
