The Great American Novel

Pre-publication copies of books are sometimes sent out in very limited numbers to reviewers and bookstore buyers. They come in various forms including bound galleys, uncorrected proofs, advance reading copies, and advance review copies. The print-run for these pre-publication formats can vary from just the few copies necessary for in-house editing, to several hundred for a popular author or a book the publisher is heavily promoting. Depending on what era they are from, are sometimes very fragile and rarely survive. They are prized both by completists, who want everything they can get from a particular author, as well as by bibliographers and scholars, who compare them to the printed book for textual variants.
